Short answer: eXp pays revenue share out of its own share of commissions, not out of any agent's split. Per eXp, it redistributes 50% of the company's 20% portion to agents who helped grow the brokerage by sponsoring productive agents. It's performance based and not guaranteed. eXp says the median Tier 1 revenue share is $0.

This is the mechanics. Not a pitch, and not a reason to join.

Here's how eXp describes it on eXp's official costs and income disclosure (exprealty.com/income). When you sponsor an agent who closes deals, eXp pays a portion of its company revenue from those deals to the sponsor. It comes from eXp's side of the split. The agent you sponsored keeps their full share.

You build it by attracting productive agents and helping them succeed. eXp's own words: earnings "require active leadership and mentorship." So it isn't passive. It's a second job, and it's optional.

It isn't guaranteed either. eXp states the median revenue share for a typical Tier 1 agent is $0. Most agents earn little or nothing from it.

There are multiple tiers based on who sponsored whom. The exact percentages and rules change, so read eXp's current chart and plan documents instead of anyone's screenshot, mine included.

My take: decide if eXp fits your production business first. If it does, revenue share is one more thing to understand. If it doesn't, revenue share shouldn't talk you into it.

Income disclaimer: revenue share and equity are performance based and not guaranteed. Most agents earn limited or no revenue share or equity. See eXp's official costs and income disclosure (exprealty.com/income).

Questions to ask any brokerage, including mine

  • Where are the current revenue share plan rules published?
  • What does it take to qualify, and what are the vesting rules?
  • What does the official income disclosure say about typical results?
  • Do I ever have to sponsor anyone? (At eXp, no.)
